Philippa Crawford |Black and pale green Grid 'Shibori' with black ends | Vintage Kimono Silk Scarf

All the silks in this scarf collection are made from unpicked kimono dating between 1940-1960. They have been carefully selected and cleaned before use. The highly skilled artist makers often got together with their clients and together they would decide the patterns, images, colours etc used. The dying techniques vary from paste resist, silk screen, hand painting, batik and shibori which are all very labour-intensive processes. All the designs and images created have some significance in relation to seasons, symbols of longevity, good luck and happiness.

Philippa has been an artist for over 35 years and during that time she has had many phases and styles of work. She initially trained in textile design producing hand painted silk garments. From there she moved on to 'Art to Wear' brooches which were exhibited in prestigious galleries, both private and public, all over the world for many years, from 1985-2010...Paris, London, New York, Japan, Norway, Germany, Belgium, UK, Ireland etc. They were made using all sorts of materials including copper, silver and gold leaf, paint, leaves and paper. She was awarded a grant from the Scottish Arts Council in 1979 and a few years later she got more funding from The Crafts Council of Great Britain to exhibit abroad.
