Elizabeth

Elizabeth, Elspeth, Betsy and Bess,
They all went together to seek a bird's nest;
They found a bird's nest with five eggs in,
They all took one, and left four in.

Riddles like this have been popular since the seventeenth century. This one is a play on the name Elizabeth of which there are at least fifteen variations. The idea is that all the names refer to only one girl and therefore only one egg was taken!

John W Holt studied Graphic Design and Illustration at the London College of Printing (now the London College of Communication ) in the late sixties under such well known designers as Tom Eckersley, Peter Paul Piech and Steve Dwoskin. He worked as a designer in London before moving to the then Northampton School of Art, (now the University of Northampton) . He later became Head of the BA Illustration Course for many years before retiring in 2013. Since then he has become interested in combining his fascination with aspects of history with a slightly surreal view on how to interpret them visually. He also finds inspiration from commenting on the devastation we bring upon our own planet and existence, whether through the carelessness and greed caused by those with power or the inane cruelty of humans upon other species.
